Housed in the May School of Arts and Sciences  the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures offers a major and minor in Spanish as well as a minor in Chinese. The study of languages is an integral part of a liberal arts education.

Our Department’s course offerings meet several of the General Education requirements.

Departmental Mission

The departmental mission for majors in Spanish is:

  • to offer relevant and pedagogically effective courses of language and culture to students at every level of learning;
  • to serve the College and the wider community as it pertains to languages, literatures, and cultures;
  • to empower students to successfully navigate cross-cultural exchanges and to more profoundly understand other people and their cultures;
  • to expose students to other worldviews, sensitize them to differences, and promote ideas of inclusion, understanding, and acceptance of diverse perspectives-necessary skills for denizens of multicultural and multilingual societies in the United States and elsewhere;
  • to enable students to expand their sphere of personal and cultural references, thereby becoming better informed global citizens;
  • to produce graduates who think critically, who are better able to identify and overcome cultural barriers, and who are thereby more competitive in the global labor market.

Learning Goals

Learning Goals of the Spanish Major:

  • Students will develop interpersonal communication skills in Spanish;
  • Students will develop presentational speaking skills in Spanish;
  • Students will develop interpretive listening and reading skills in Spanish;
  • Students will develop an awareness of many cultural manifestations (literary, artistic, and cinematic among others) produced throughout the Spanish-speaking World.
