Housed in the May School of Arts and Sciences , the Department of Biology offers both a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Arts major as well as a minor in Biology.

Departmental Mission

The Biology Department of Stonehill College is committed to providing comprehensive and rigorous Biology training in the context of a liberal arts education. We strive to thoroughly prepare students for careers and advanced education in the Biological Sciences, biology-base careers, and health professions by offering excellent classroom and laboratory learning augmented by meaningful research and internship experiences. Our faculty members are committed to providing individual attention to each of our students and to give them the opportunity to pursue their interests in the many facets of Biology.

Learning Goals

Majors in Biology will:

  • demonstrate a clear understanding of core concepts in molecular and cellular biology, genetics, evolution, ecology, and organismal structure and function and apply these concepts to fundamental research, issues in human health, questions in global change biology, and other scientific challenges.
  • demonstrate competence in fundamental laboratory skills, including the ability to design experiments, to analyze and evaluate data, to use appropriate computational tools, and to recognize and mitigate bias in scientific studies.
  • demonstrate a clear understanding of how fundamental concepts in physics, chemistry, and math apply to living systems.
  • evaluate scientific information in the context of philosophical, ethical, and societal concerns of science and demonstrate a clear understanding that an inclusive and diverse environment that welcomes all scientists is essential for scientific excellence because scientific innovation flourishes with the fusion of different perspectives and experiences.

The College supports the Biology Department’s effort to remain current in fields where rapid technological and theoretical advances have become the norm. The Department is committed to incorporating the best of the new into its curriculum without neglecting the classical areas of Biology, which remain critical to a broad, liberal arts-based education in the life sciences.

Pre-Health Professions

The Biology curriculum strongly prepares students interested in pursuing a professional medical career, such as an allopathic (MD) or osteopathic (DO) physician, dentist, veterinarian, optometrist, pharmacist, podiatrist, or chiropractor. Students interested in these careers should discuss their interests with their Biology academic advisor and refer to complimentary Pre-Health Professions Advising available at the Career Development Center for additional information about required courses.

Pre-Health Professions

The Biology curriculum robustly prepares students interested in pursuing graduate education in Biology and related disciplines, as well as directly entering the workforce in ecology, education, biomedical research, biotechnology, and a wide-range of other careers.

Pre-Allied Health Professions

Students interested in any of the Allied Health professions (Physician Assistant, Genetic Counselor, Clinical Research Coordinator, Registered Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, Public Health, Nutritionist, etc.) should discuss the required courses and experiential requirements with their Biology academic advisor.
