Major

The major in Philosophy requires ten courses beyond the Philosophy Cornerstone requirement.

The selection and sequence of courses for both the major and the minor should be made in consultation with the Chairperson or advisor.

• One Philosophy Moral Inquiry course (PHL 221 , PHL 222 , PHL 223 , 
  PHL 224
   , PHL 235 , or PHL 236 ).

Note that only one PHL Moral Inquiry course will count towards the 10 courses for the major.

• One course from the Ancient and Medieval Philosophy area below
• One course from the Modern and Contemporary Philosophy area below 
• PHL 241 - Elementary Logic  
• Five Philosophy electives at the 250 level or higher  

• PHL 421 - Senior Philosophy Colloquium  

PHL 421 involves writing an independent thesis with guidance from a member of the department. The student should approach their prospective advisor at the beginning of the senior year.
